Dialogue practice
In this lesson, we will practice our first dialogue. By engaging in various conversations, you will improve your listening and speaking skills, as well as become more familiar with common phrases and expressions used in everyday situations.
Dialogue:
A: Hallo!
B: Hoi!
A: Ik ben (naam). En jij? Hoe heet jij?
B: Ik heet (naam).
A: Aangenaam! Hoe gaat het?
B: Het gaat goed. En met jou?
A: Met mij gaat het ook goed!
Asking “How are you?” in Dutch
In Dutch, the most common way to ask “How are you?” is:
- Hoe gaat het (met jou)?
You can also ask more casually:
- Alles goed?
- Ça va? (Very informal, only used in Belgium)
Possible answers
- Goed, dank je. (Good, thank you.)
- Heel goed! (Very good!)
- Niet zo goed. (Not so good.)
- Slecht. (Bad.)
- Prima! (Great!)
Introducing yourself: “Aangenaam”
When you meet someone for the first time, it’s common to say:
- Aangenaam. (Nice to meet you.)
This expression is used in both Belgium and the Netherlands, and it’s neutral and polite.
About “Leuk je te ontmoeten”
The sentence “Leuk je te ontmoeten” (also "Nice to meet you.") is used mainly in the Netherlands. In Belgium, it sounds less natural and is not used much in everyday situations. If you want a friendly but natural Belgian alternative, use aangenaam.
